A new web site named www.HistoricAerials.com has aerial photographs available

South Amboy Roundhouse
The shops and roundhouse were
built in 1919, shortly after WWI.
1940
This view from 1940
shows the 21 year old 12 stall roundhouse with the turntable and the shops
below it.
1947
This shot from 1947 shows the roundhouse
was cut back to only 7 stalls.
1957
10 years later, by
1957, the roundhouse was quickly demolished after the EMD SW900 Diesels
replaced all the steam engines in 1954.
The blah blah building was also removed to make a
little room for the shops expansion.
1972
This shot in 1972 shows a clearing where the roundhouse and turntable used to
be. Eventually, the blah blah building was
built here.
2002
By 1995 only the blah blah building is still
standing, but doesn’t look used. The
shops had all been demolished in the early 80s after Conrail first abandoned
them, then they caught fire in 1983?
By 2002, everything is gone except
traces of the roundhouse foundation and the foundation of the burnt out blah blah building which also burned.
